When talking about Artificial Intelligence (AI) machines and Application Programming Interface(API), little or no justice would be made if we did not refer to the old times—the beginning of smartphones, computers, etc. Gone are the days when mobile phones were powered by low-end operating systems with limited functions, limited apps, multitasking restrictions, separate application accessing, and in a nutshell, low performance. Still, the quest for better mobile app experience has yet to be completed.
Gradually, developers around the world are seeing the need for sophisticated machines that can execute more professional tasks than previously. Meanwhile, this project is being propelled further by consumers’ quest for a personal assistant that can answer questions, find information, launch services, send messages, and much more. With hard work, consistency and much-needed support, we’re almost there. Where? ”The generation of much better smart apps, or shall we say smart mobile apps”. To ensure we give more justice to the topic, we need not only to dig a bit further into AI and API but also to examine and analyze what they entail.
An API is not limited to computer hardware, a web-based system or the rest, but also part of the building blocks of mobile operating systems. API can be used to specify the interface between a mobile app and the operating system on which it runs.
For example, POSIX through API specifies a set of common APIs that aims to enable an application written for a conformable OS to be compiled for another POSIX conformable operating system. Berkeley and Linux implements the POSIX APIs
Artificial Intelligence is a characteristic implemented on a device, perceiving its environment and taking actions that maximize its chance of success for a goal. This function enables them to mimic cognitive human activities such as “learning” and “problem solving”. Optical character recognition and understanding human speech are classed as Artificial Intelligence but the latter seems only to be perceived as an exemplar.
Why AI and API are important factors in the next generation of mobile apps? It’s simple—consumers need a fast, easy and soothing mobile experience and this can be well evidenced by the current demonstrations—your application is uninstalled if the interface is bad, or if they have to search forever to find the slightest piece of info.
Therefore, hundreds of linguistic and software engineers have devoted so much to build a better mobile experience. As part of their accomplishments to improve navigability and convenience, developers are integrating deep linking into their apps, like android intents (messaging object to request an action from other app) etc, allowing users to work across apps without needing to launch them separately. To further narrow this down, research shows voice command can be of great importance, and therefore voice interface features have been developed.
Speech Recognition Gets Smart
The first is the Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR), which literally transcribes speech to text. Some platforms like Android provide this capability. Next is the “Natural Learning Understanding” (NLU), which is where the AI comes in. Developers provide examples of the request the machine should learn and machine learning is used to learn these requests in reference to similar ones provided thereafter. In addition, the system takes into account discussions and real-world contexts—context minded. In conclusion, it’s only when a consumer request is being understood that it is fulfilled in your app.
