How Can Employees Be More Productive?
A CIO of a fortune 1000 company told me about her biggest challenge: After several weeks of training, many of her most talented younger workers were quitting in part because they were frustrated with the tools she was providing. These workers complained they were far more productive with the tools they used at home versus the tools this company provided.
Together, we examined those tools. Yes, she had some issues with outdated software, which is common in large organizations. But it turned out that the problem went deeper than any individual productivity application. The problem was more about how those tools were implemented and connected.
First of all, employees need collaboration tools to be productive. Today’s workers are already used to B2C versions, including phone conferencing (like freeconferencecall.com), instant messaging (Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp), video conferencing (Skype), Screen sharing (Google Hangouts, Skype), document sharing (Dropbox, Google Drive), social networks (Twitter, Instagram), forums and wikis (Reddit, Wikipedia), and email (Apple Mail, Gmail). As we know, consumer software usually lacks the corporate security you need, so you will of course need to provide them with secure, corporate versions of these capabilities.
The Bigger Problem
But the collaboration tools and other enterprise applications they did have access to were hard to find on their enterprise employee network, and they required separate and cumbersome passwords.
Tie Them Together
How can a CIO help employees be more productive? An enterprise employee portal is an effective way to deliver the tools employees need to be productive. Deliver them to the right people, and make them easy to find.
But more importantly, you’ll want to tie them to one another, so that the internal network effect makes each application more effective together than alone. This inter-portlet communication can be amazingly powerful.
Also, you’ll want to strongly consider making the content generated and optionally searchable within your firewalls, and tie them to your corporate directory. This is another area where your enterprise portal can dramatically increase the efficiency and effectiveness of employees.
More than ever before, today’s employees want to work where their hours invested can impact the world. Providing efficient tools within an enterprise portal to help employees be more productive will help your employeess be happier and more productive.
Designed and implemented right, employee portals are be an extremely effective way to improve employee efficiency, employee effectiveness, employee retention, and employee happiness.
